Strangers in the Field
December 3, 2011Me and the housemate were at the Cuenca Bazaar doing some labor of love last weekend. Admist all the sales pitching and smiling, we took breaks. SMILING is hardcore and it gives me migraines. Mandatory breaks would include people watching in the football field while eating halo-halo or as they say it in the south heilo-heilo. There were quite a few random strangers I spotted like:
1.3 Korean brothers or maybe cousins (yes, they are related and I can pretty much tell that they are Korean from their skinny legs and their matching hipster glasses. No, not really) - They were all just passing time kicking some good old soccer ball. Seeing them briefly took me to 2004 where I had the biggest and gayest crush on this football player at school. Gayest because I could never imagine actually rooting for a guy who can be mistaken for Anne Hathaway ( very remotely androgynous). Let’s just say he was named “Chase” and he adores sporty and ballsy women. In this case, let’s name his girlfriend “Curly” (the name also rhymes with ugly, but let’s not be too shallow and insecure) who also happens to be in the women’s football team. Our other friends were also in the football team, so while we were actually watching and supporting them, I was also secretly admiring the androgyny of “Chase”. Beautiful bastard. Why can’t I be her…uhm him?!
2. 3 bestfriends and a football - It’s too vague to actually assume that they are bestfriends, I mean 2 girls and one guy, I’m getting the Dawson’s creek vibe somewhere. The first girl who sports the girl nextdoor type was wearing a tank top, denim cut-offs and a sneakers, the other was gunning for a more outdoorsy lady in plaid and the guy was being a regular joe wearing boat shoes while throwing some pigskin. Come’on!!? Southern kids. Can’t really get pass what they were wearing. Soooo superficial that way.
3. Grandpa and 2 Freakishly perky grand daughters - The first one was really perky. I think she was the older one. She kept asking to hide her purse inside his grandfather’s shirt and then she asks her sister to look for it. It was cute, some bonding time with the grandkids. The granpa was really sweet and would oblige to whatever trickery his grandkids would command him to do. I just hope that when they grow up they would continue to be sweet to their grandparents. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for the future of those perky soon -to-be-cheerleaders! Ready? Okay!
People-watching is therapeutic for me. Try it. Being the observer. It’s like group process all over again! I miss college!
